Responsibilities
Systems Engineer / Administrator to provide support of complex systems running Oracle (Sun) Solaris and RedHat Linux operating systems.
This position supports a very large number domestic and international distributed servers spanning multiple applications whose primary function is to deliver critical call processing and call routing services to external high profile Verizon customers. The roles and responsibilities for this position consist of, but are not limited to Engineering Level Support (Design/Architecture services for hardware and operating systems), Hardware and Software Installations & Upgrades, and Systems Administration (Implementation and configuration); change management, patch management, project management, remediation (break/fix and Project Lead) functions and are required to take immediate actions when necessary. Failure of this function to its fullest critically impedes Verizon's ability to deploy new or updated customer features in a timely manner and to immediately analyze, react and resolve server issues that may account for lengthy and expensive customer outages which also includes FCC Reportable Outages.
Provides in depth analysis of proposed hardware and operating system configurations, provides project lead/technical leadership for complex platforms ensuring proposed work for the project is well defined and achievable, support requirements and schedules are met, and issues are addressed. Full support of the larger complex platforms ensures that Verizon continually meets external customer needs and expectations for service availability and reliability.
Determine broad, general requirements, set project goals, determine the specific project requirements, provide level of effort assessments (LOE) and scheduling. Interact with other peer engineers, application owners, vendors and internal support groups providing leadership and technical expertise; resolve issues and obtain agreement between the various groups.
Provide Engineering Level Support, Hardware and Software Installations & Upgrades services and Systems Administration focused on platforms (projects and servers) supported by the MidRange Systems Support (MRSS) organization. This includes fulfilling the overall Project Lead role, working across all projects supported by the team as well as participation in the on-call (after hours) rotation. As the SME on assigned projects, may be called upon 24x7 for their specific expertise. The participation in on-call rotations spans all platforms (application servers) supported by the MRSS team.
Hardware and Software Installations & Upgrades in the production environment for call processing and call routing platforms. This includes Problem Management, Change Management, Configuration Management, Installation Plans, Method of Procedures (MOPs), MASTARS, Engineering Level Support, etc.
Primary interface with external organizations for the MRSS supported projects that the engineer will be engaged in; includes technology reviews, support requirements and ensuring that established MRSS processes are adhered too, etc.
Day to day system administration of development & test servers for call processing and call routing servers, which includes Problem Management, Change Management, Configuration Management.
Performs Technical direction on complex problems, input into process and procedures and overall support to team.
This position works on complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of various factors. Exercises judgment within broadly defined practices and policies in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Receives minimal instructions on recurrent work assignments and only general instructions on new or more complex assignments. Some of the decisions will be made independently and will typically affect the work of others such as peers, application developers, testers, Tier 2 support groups as well as Verizon’s external customers. Also required to determine methods and procedures on new assignments and provides guidance and assistance to peers.
In addition to fulfilling the in-depth technical responsibilities and Project Lead role, this engineer must also fulfill a high performing role within the team. This is essential due to the criticality, visibility and revenue generation that is associated with the platforms that will be supported.
Qualifications
BS or equivalent technical job-related work experience.
Incumbent must possess a vast degree of technical experience and knowledge on the Oracle (Sun) Solaris and RedHat Linux operating systems and the associated server hardware including storage subsystems. This position requires many years of in-depth technical expertise, service support delivery and solid project management skills.
Must be able to function with limited direction and guidance and be able to diagnose a wide variety of problems.
Must possess excellent customer relation and communication skills.
Must demonstrate a high level of understanding regarding established Verizon business practices and procedures.
Must be able to accurately assess problems and if necessary communicate the problem information to vendors and drive vendor to a successful resolution.
Must be able to work in a team environment, demonstrate leadership skills and be able to mentor junior engineers both technically and follow established business practices and guidelines.
Must possess the in-depth technical skills on Linux clustering concepts, Oracle (Sun) Zones, SAN storage, Oracle hardware, HP hardware and Dell hardware.
