Filing an appeal of a decision regarding unemployment insurance allows you to participate in a hearing before a hearing officer. You have the right to be represented before and during the hearing by the representative of your choice, which can be an attorney or non-attorney. Many non-lawyers act as representatives for claimants, including former lawyers, retired attorneys, former department personnel, and past hearing officers.
Ordinarily, the notice that you intend to appeal the decision of denial must be received no later than 20 days. If you're notice of appeal is late, you or your representative may be allowed to appeal upon a showing of good cause for the late appeal.
